Researchers from the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control conducted a comprehensive study involving over 2 million adults tested for COVID-19 between 2020 and 2024. The severity of COVID-19 infection directly correlated with diabetes risk. Patients managed in ambulatory care had a 15% increased risk, hospitalized patients faced nearly double the risk, and those in intensive care had more than triple the risk.

Interestingly, no heightened diabetes risk was found among partially or fully vaccinated individuals. In contrast, unvaccinated COVID-positive patients had a 28% higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
