The cycling scene in Melbourne is experiencing a surge in popularity, thanks in part to the growing popularity of electric bikes (ebikes). With the rise in fuel prices, more people are turning to ebikes as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative. This shift is evident in the sales figures, with retailers reporting a threefold increase in ebike sales compared to the previous year. The key to unlocking the full potential of ebikes lies in the development of robust infrastructure, including dedicated bike paths and charging facilities. Melbourne's cycling infrastructure has seen significant improvements, with new trails and bridges enhancing the overall experience for riders. One notable example is the Dixon Veloway, a 2.5km elevated bike path that connects Melbourne's west to the CBD. This innovative design, inspired by Beijing's bike highway, provides a safe and efficient route for cyclists, offering a glimpse into the future of urban cycling in Australia. The trail's four-meter width and fluoro green color create a unique and memorable experience, making it a standout feature of Melbourne's cycling upgrades. The West Gate Tunnel project, which includes the Dixon Veloway, has transformed the cycling landscape in the city, providing a much-needed safe connector for riders. Another significant development is the 'Cross-City Caterpillar', a 220-meter cable-stayed bridge that connects Docklands to the Capital City trail and Moonee Ponds Creek trail. This new bridge, part of the West Gate Tunnel works, has made it possible to cycle safely from the southern to northern suburbs of Melbourne, via designated paths. The improvements extend beyond the West Gate Tunnel, with separated bike lanes along Wellington Street in Collingwood, Heidelberg Road in Clifton Hill, and St Kilda Road in the CBD, among others. These enhancements have made cycling safer and more enjoyable, allowing riders to avoid high-speed roads and narrow streets. For those seeking a great bike ride close to the city, the Kororoit Creek trail is a must-visit. This 15km shared-use path crisscrosses Kororoit Creek, offering a moderately easy ride through regenerated bushlands, basalt cliffs, and rocky outcrops. The trail is also home to a diverse range of native birds and plant species, including river red gums and blackwood trees. The Lilydale to Warburton bike trail, also known as the 'Warby trail', is another excellent recreational ride through the Yarra Valley. This 40km path has seen significant improvements, including enhanced intersection safety, connectivity to the Yarra Valley trail loop, and the addition of ebike charging stations, a public bike pump, and a bike repair station. The trail passes through the towns of Wandin, Seville, and Yarra Junction, offering a picturesque journey through lush forests and wildflowers. The Murray to Mountains rail trail is one of Victoria's most beautiful bike trails, stretching 130km through the heart of north-east Victoria. This trail, which starts at the northern end of Wangaratta, takes riders past farms, country homes, wheatfields, and roaming sheep, before reaching more forested areas. The most popular route is Wangaratta to Everton and then Beechworth, offering a well-paved pathway with stunning views. The Omeo mountain bike park, located in Victoria's alpine region, is a haven for those seeking off-road adventure. This 114km park offers freeriding, stomach-flipping descents, and scenic adventure rides through the foothills of Victoria's alpine national park. While there are no charging facilities at the park, public charging points are available in Omeo, providing convenience for riders. These new trails and improvements have transformed Melbourne's cycling scene, making it more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable. With the growing popularity of ebikes and the continued development of infrastructure, Melbourne is poised to become a cycling hub, offering a unique and memorable experience for riders of all ages and abilities.
