Harvard Kennedy School Welcomes High-Profile Visiting Fellows, Sparking Excitement and Debate
The Harvard Kennedy School is making waves with its latest visiting fellows announcement! Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are set to join the Institute of Politics (IOP) this spring, alongside an impressive cohort of resident fellows.
But here's where it gets intriguing: the visiting fellows will collaborate with six resident fellows, including two former members of presidential administrations. Chris Liddell, who served as deputy chief of staff in the Trump administration, and Rohit Chopra, a former director under Biden, bring unique insights to the table. And they're not alone. The resident fellows boast an array of diverse backgrounds, from Chrystia Freeland, Canada's former deputy prime minister and economic advisor to Ukraine's President Zelensky, to Tishaura O. Jones, the former mayor of St. Louis, and Byron York, a renowned political correspondent.
This spring, students can expect engaging study groups led by these fellows, covering topics from consumer protection to international relations. Pete Buttigieg, a Harvard alumnus, expressed his enthusiasm for reconnecting with the IOP and inspiring students to embrace public service during what he calls a critical juncture for American democracy. He believes empowering youth in politics is more crucial than ever.
Rohit Chopra offers a thought-provoking perspective, emphasizing the impact of corporate power and regulation on the U.S. economy. He argues that corporate interests not only shape our daily lives but also significantly influence government decisions. Meanwhile, Chrystia Freeland plans to engage students on global economic and democratic challenges, drawing from her rich political experience in Canada.
Other fellows, like Aimee Rogstad Guidera and Tishaura O. Jones, will focus on education policy and local government, respectively, fostering conversations about leadership and democracy. Byron York, with his extensive reporting experience, will reflect on the broader forces shaping American politics.
The IOP's interim co-directors, Beth Myers and Ned Price, praised the fellows' diverse expertise and its potential to inspire students to pursue public service careers. They believe these conversations will prepare the next generation for leadership roles globally.
Anoushka Lal and Samantha Ruazol, chairs of the Fellows and Study Groups Program, highlighted the program's success in fostering cross-partisan dialogue and civic engagement. They believe these conversations are essential for a healthier political climate.
Adding to the excitement, Pete Buttigieg will also join the Center of Public Leadership as a Hauser Leader, alongside prominent figures like John Anzalone, Anita Dunn, David Lebryk, Deval Patrick, and former Speaker Paul Ryan.
This star-studded lineup of visiting fellows promises to bring fresh perspectives and engaging discussions to Harvard Kennedy School. But the question remains: how will these diverse voices and experiences shape the student experience and the broader political discourse? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!
