A Conversation with Tony Baumann
Fashion Journal: Tony, how did you become Mecca's Head of Fabulosity? What does this role entail?
Tony: To be honest, I can't recall the exact moment this title came about. It started as a joke, but it stuck! I love everything about beauty - the brands, the passionate team, and the daily interactions. My role is to ensure our customers, brands, and team members have a fabulous experience.
Fashion Journal: Did you always dream of working in beauty?
Tony: As a child, my dream was to make people feel great about themselves through beauty. I remember playing with my mom, putting blue eyeshadow on her and styling her hair. It was all about creativity and making her feel special. Little did I know, I was destined for Mecca!
Fashion Journal: How did you transition into the beauty industry?
Tony: I started with Mecca after a career in hairdressing and makeup artistry. I brought my small business experience and passion for beauty to the team. Working with Mecca's global brands was like reliving my childhood, but on a grander scale!
I spent a few years in-store, showcasing Mecca's magic to our customers. Those years were golden, and they continue to influence my decisions today. From Experience Manager to Colour Manager, and now Head of Fabulosity, I've had my hands in every pie, and it's delicious!
Fashion Journal: Take us through a typical day at work.
Tony: My role is versatile, so each day brings new challenges and opportunities. I work on product development, collaborate with the retail team, assist marketing, and host brand founders. I even spend time in-store, ensuring our customers have a fabulous experience.
Fashion Journal: What's your style at the office?
Tony: I keep it simple with tailored silhouettes. I love grabbing unique pieces when I travel to Europe. My custom lobster orange sequin suit is a showstopper, and it's made quite an impression!
Fashion Journal: Tell us about your beauty routine.
Tony: I start with Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLite at home, followed by hydrated skin and a swipe of brow gel. My hair is always freshly blow-dried, and I layer fragrances for a signature scent. I love having my own scent, and it's a conversation starter!
Fashion Journal: What are some career highlights?
Tony: Meeting industry icons like Mr. Nars, Ellis Faas, and Charlotte Tilbury has been incredible. Meccaland and the openings of our flagship stores were pinch-me moments. Walking the Sydney Pride Parade with the team was emotional, and working at NYFW with the Nars team is a cherished memory.
Fashion Journal: What challenges have you faced?
Tony: As Mecca has grown, learning to trust and delegate has been a challenge. I love being in the details, but growth requires a different approach. Giving people space to shine and solve problems on their own has been a valuable lesson.
Fashion Journal: What's the best part of your role?
Tony: The best part is still being able to play, just like with my mom. Beauty is my playground, and it never gets old. I love the human connection, those small moments when someone feels seen and fabulous. It's all about making people feel incredible.
Fashion Journal: What surprises people about your role?
Tony: I have the freedom to float where I'm needed. Mecca trusts me to do what's best for the business, and that flexibility is empowering.
Fashion Journal: Have you ever felt star-struck?
Tony: Once, I was in a taxi with an artist who was texting Madonna. I tried to stay calm, but it was a challenge!
Fashion Journal: Any beauty founders who've inspired you?
Rose Marie Swift: The founder of RMS Beauty taught me that beauty comes from within. Her knowledge of nutrition and natural remedies inspired me to live a cleaner life.
Fashion Journal: What skills are essential in the beauty industry?
Tony: Kindness, flexibility, and humor. Laughter is the best medicine, and it's served me well in my 40 years in the industry.
Fashion Journal: Advice for those aspiring to a role like yours?
Tony: Be open to learning from everyone. Master the art of interaction and embrace the human side of beauty. Making others feel at ease and confident is powerful. In a tech-driven world, people need human connection. Find what resonates with others about you and amplify it.
Practical tip: Know your craft inside out. Understand the details and make it your own. Meditation, outside interests, and authenticity are key. Do your research, be present, and always find time to laugh.
