The Surprising Weight Gain After Stopping Obesity Jabs: A Cambridge University Study
A recent study from Cambridge University has revealed a concerning trend among individuals who discontinue weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy. The research found that people who stop taking these medications regain nearly two-thirds of the weight they initially lost within a year of discontinuation.
The study, which analyzed six trials involving over 3,200 participants, highlights a significant challenge for those seeking long-term weight management. Despite the initial weight loss, the study suggests that the body may not retain the benefits of the injections indefinitely. After 52 weeks of discontinuation, participants on average regained 60% of their lost weight, indicating a rapid return to pre-treatment levels.
However, there's a silver lining. By 60 weeks, the weight regain slows down, and individuals manage to maintain a quarter of the weight they initially lost. This suggests that the body may eventually stabilize, but at a higher weight than before the treatment.
The study's findings raise important questions about the long-term effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists, a class of drugs designed to mimic the hormone GLP-1 and regulate blood sugar and insulin levels. While these injections have shown promise in treating type 2 diabetes, their impact on obesity management is more complex.
Brajan Budini, a medical student involved in the study, explains, "These drugs act as appetite suppressants, making us feel full sooner and reducing our food intake. When people stop taking them, they may experience a rapid weight regain as they take their foot off the brake."
The study also emphasizes the need for further research into the impact of these drugs on body composition. Current prescribing guidelines may not adequately address the risk of weight regain, as they often lack specific recommendations for long-term use.
Steven Luo, another medical student, advises, "Doctors and patients should be aware of the potential weight regain when discontinuing these drugs. Encouraging lifestyle changes, such as improved diet and exercise, can help individuals maintain their weight loss progress even after stopping the injections."
This study serves as a reminder that weight management is a complex journey, and the effects of obesity treatments may not be permanent. As the debate around the long-term use of these injections continues, further research is crucial to understanding and mitigating the potential risks.
