Tasmania's New Prescription Policy: A Step Towards Easier Access to Medication
Tasmanians can now access essential medications more conveniently. The recent legislation allows local pharmacies to dispense prescriptions from interstate doctors, including treatments for ADHD, opioids, medicinal cannabis, and anxiety medications. This reform is a significant step towards removing barriers for Tasmanians seeking medical care outside the state.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff emphasizes the benefits of this change, stating, 'Tasmanians who access medical care interstate and are prescribed certain medications can now have them dispensed in Tasmania, regardless of where their doctor is based.'
The Poisons Amendment (Interstate Prescriptions) Act 2025 also extends its benefits to visitors. Health Minister Bridget Archer highlights the importance of this legislation, saying, 'We’re removing unnecessary barriers and ensuring Tasmanians can access the medicines they have been prescribed.'
This reform is particularly beneficial for patients who require specialized or controlled medications, as it eliminates the need for them to travel to obtain their prescriptions. Pharmacy Guild of Australia's Joe O’Malley expresses his enthusiasm, stating, 'This is going to make life easier for Tasmanian patients.'
The Department of Health has provided comprehensive information on its website, ensuring that patients, prescribers, and pharmacists are well-informed about the changes. This initiative is a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility and convenience for Tasmanians and visitors alike.
