Therapists Report Rising War Anxiety: How to Cope with Geopolitical Stress (2026)

The Impact of Geopolitical Tensions on Mental Health: A Deep Dive

In today's complex world, the reverberations of global conflicts are felt far beyond the battlefield. As therapists across the globe report a surge in anxiety linked to escalating geopolitical tensions, we delve into the psychological fallout of war.

The Rise of Geopolitical Anxiety

With the ongoing US-Iran conflict and the protracted war in Ukraine, therapists are witnessing a marked increase in anxiety among their patients. This anxiety is not confined to a specific demographic; it cuts across new and existing patients, indicating a broader shift in the collective psyche.

"The long-held assumption that war and instability belong to a past generation or to troubled countries elsewhere is breaking down," says Charlene Duca, founder of Paths Clinic. "The sense that danger is no longer comfortably distant is difficult to process."

This psychological shift manifests as a sense of 'quiet helplessness' and a feeling of moving closer to something terrible. While some patients compulsively monitor the news, others avoid it altogether, but the underlying theme is a pervasive sense of anxiety and uncertainty.

The Challenge of Geopolitical Anxiety

What makes geopolitical anxiety particularly challenging is its intangible nature. Unlike more tangible sources of anxiety, such as personal safety or financial stability, the threat of war feels vast and beyond individual control. As Duca puts it, "the worry simply sits there, with nowhere to go."

"Anxiety typically drives people to act, seeking a sense of control or safety. But with geopolitical anxiety, that drive has nowhere useful to go," she explains.

The Role of Social Media

Social media, with its constant stream of news and images, plays a significant role in exacerbating these fears. Matthew Bartolo, founder of Willingness, notes that reported levels of anxiety have been steadily increasing over the past few years, likely due to the constant exposure to war-related content online.

"Videos showing scenes of devastation juxtaposed with images of the same areas before the conflict can lead to emotional exhaustion," Bartolo says.

Coping Strategies

So, how can individuals cope with this pervasive anxiety? Both Duca and Bartolo emphasize the importance of limiting exposure to war-related news, focusing instead on what is within one's control: daily routines, physical activity, and supportive relationships.

"Grounding techniques, such as slow breathing and walking, can provide relief," Bartolo suggests. "Speaking openly with others also helps prevent anxiety from becoming overwhelming."

Duca adds that challenging catastrophic thinking and distinguishing between what is possible and what is probable can be helpful. Maintaining daily routines, staying socially connected, and practicing meditation and mindfulness are also recommended.

"The goal is to remain informed yet still anchored in our immediate, lived experience," she concludes.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it's crucial to recognize the impact of global conflicts on our mental health and to prioritize our well-being. By understanding and addressing the unique challenges of geopolitical anxiety, we can strive for a sense of stability and peace amidst the chaos.
