A shocking environmental crisis is unfolding in Wigan, England, where a massive illegal waste dump poses grave risks to both the environment and public health. The 25,000-tonne dump, located near a primary school, has become a ticking time bomb, with potential consequences that are both alarming and controversial.
Lady Shas Sheehan, chair of the Lords environment committee, has called on the government to take immediate action, highlighting the urgency of the situation. She visited the site in Bickershaw, Wigan, and witnessed firsthand the environmental and public health hazards it presents.
But here's where it gets controversial: the Environment Agency, responsible for managing such crises, has refused to step in and clean up the illegal dump. This decision has sparked debate and raised questions about the agency's priorities and funding.
Lady Sheehan argues that the agency should be directed by the government to take action, especially given its recent efforts to clear illegal waste in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, where millions were spent. She emphasizes that the Wigan dump is not an inert facility and poses similar risks, with potential fires, rat infestations, and the breeding of flies and maggots as temperatures rise.
"The pervasive stench will only intensify," she warns.
And this is the part most people miss: the largest area of land where the waste is dumped in Wigan has no owner, making it a legal quagmire. The government explains that the land has reverted to the ownership of the Duchy of Lancaster, and currently, there are no powers to force the Duchy to clear the land.
The Environment Agency has drawn up plans to remove the waste, but only if funding becomes available, according to Sue Hayman, a parliamentary undersecretary. The agency considers the Bolton House Road site in Wigan to carry a lower level of risk compared to the Kidlington dump, which was deemed an exceptional case due to its significant environmental risks.
Criminal investigations are ongoing, with four men arrested in connection with the illegal dumping in Kidlington. The investigation into the Wigan dump is also underway.
A spokesperson for the Duchy of Lancaster assures that they are committed to working with Wigan Council and the Environment Agency to address the issue.
