Xiaomi Responds to SU7 Sedan Fire in China: What Happened? (2026)

Xiaomi officials address the recent fire incident involving their SU7 sedan in China, shedding light on the cause and addressing misconceptions. The fire, which occurred in Yingkou, Liaoning Province, sparked online discussions due to the unusual firework-like explosions. According to Xiaomi Auto, the fire originated from a residual fire source inside the vehicle, not the battery. The company clarifies that the 'firework' sounds were caused by deploying airbags, not a battery issue. This incident highlights a common cause of EV fires in China: flammable objects left inside the car. Xiaomi SU7, a popular Chinese electric car, delivered 258,164 units last year and gained praise from Ford CEO Jim Farley. The 2024 model features a 4997/1963/1455 mm design and offers an AWD variant with 495 kW (664 hp) and a top-trim Max modification with a 101 kWh ternary battery for 800 km of CLTC range. The upcoming 2026 model will introduce upgrades such as dual-chamber air suspension, up to 902 km of range, and a peak power of 508 kW (681 hp), priced between 229,900 and 309,900 yuan (33,115 – 44,640 USD).
